Thanks to a leaked transcript of conversations recorded by a US bugging device in José Manuel Barroso's office, Observer can reveal the line-up of the new European Commission. Some portfolios have been split to create jobs for all 25 commissioners. And there are plenty of surprises.
Monetary affairs - Siim Kallas. The man who likes to be known as the "father of the Estonian kroon" surely has the skills necessary to make the euro work. He could become the killer of the Estonian kroon too.
Financial regulation - Peter Mandelson. Who better than the ex-minister who took an interest-free home loan from a man whose company his department was investigating?
Tax - Günter Verheugen. Having got the eastern Europeans in, he can set about blunting their competitive advantage against Germany with an EU-wide tax rate.
Trade - Louis Michel. The antagonistic Belgian ex-foreign minister is just the man to fight a war with the US.
External affairs - Dalia Grybauskaite. Unlike the EU, the Iron Lady of Lithuania knows how to stand up to Russia.
Internal market - Ján Figel. The Slovak is amply qualified by his single semester course in European Economic Integration at UFSIA Antwerp.
Competition - Ingrida Udre. The Latvians should be easy for the big countries to push around. The former member of her country's basketball and volleyball federations will also be in charge of regulating internal competitions between departments.
Development aid - Jacques Barrot. In a policy switch, it can be channeled to those poor suffering French companies such as Alstom.
Budget - Rocco Buttiglione. Italian. Say no more.
Enlargement - Benita Ferrero-Waldner. Who better than the ex-Austrian foreign minister to reconstitute the Austro-Hungarian empire?
Enterprise - Olli Rehn. One of the few commissioners to show entrepreneurial flair, the Flying Finn was a car parts salesman while playing second division football.
Fisheries - Joaquín Almunia. We may as well admit defeat and let the Spanish drain the world's seas of fish.
Justice - Markos Kyprianou. If there was any, he and the Greek Cypriots wouldn't even be in the EU after keeping Northern Cyprus out.
Environment - Danuta Hubner. The Pole could bring the whole of the EU up to the standards of the Katowice coalfields.
Youth - László Kovács. A separate portfolio given its importance for the ageing union. The pensioner was still working in the Hungarian Socialist youth movement at 36 and remains in touch with the zeitgeist.
Sport - Stavros Dimas. Perhaps the Greeks' golden touch will rub off on everyone else.
Parliamentary relations - Vladimír S{u}pidla. Handled this brief so well as Czech prime minister that he was sent to Brussels.
Health and consumer protection - Margot Wallström. The Swede with the chemical cocktail in her bloodstream would ensure all mobile phone users were forced to carry geiger counters.
Regional affairs - Charlie McCreevy. Keeping distinctive cultures, such as watching Gaelic football, alive.
Agriculture - Else Boel. The Dane describes herself as a land-owner, daughter of a land-owner. Knows her bacon.
Transport - Joe Borg. The Maltese islander could develop the proposed "motorways of the sea" - and requisite traffic jams.
Commissioner with lots of portfolios - Neelie Kroes. Simple. She's got 12 directorships.
Research - Janez Potoc{u}nik. The Slovene egghead has a PhD and 18 years in research.
Education and culture - Viviane Reding. She's welcome to keep it

ich finde ja den ganzen Vorgang der Kommission-Bestellung höchst amüsant. Da entsenden die Länder ihre Favoriten, aber die Ressorts werden nicht beachtet. und dann beginnt die krampfhafte Zuteilung, wer wo am wenigsten Schaden anrichten wird. Richtig lustig wird es aber erst dann, wenn die Kommission geschlossen abgelehnt wird (einzelne Vorschläge dürfen ja nicht abgelehnt werden) Dann beginnt das Spiel von Neuem. Ich melde mich für diesen Fall auch gleich mal als Kommissionskandidat an! (Ressort wähl ich mir später aus) |

Vielleicht kriegst Du das Bildungsressort.
Auswaehlen wirst Du Dir's aber eh nicht selber koennen, weil da geht's nicht um Deine Praeferenzen, sondern um einen undurchschaubaren Packeleimechanismus. |
